View from our hotel room of the Sydney Opera House and harbor

Saturday, March 20, 2010

What can I say but the weather is fantastic!  The sky is as blue as you’ve ever seen it, it’s about 82°, and there is a nice breeze.  We walked and walked and walked and walked today.  Both of us were up very early – showered and dressed, ready to go by 6:30 this morning.  One of the best things we’ve done so far on this trip was to reserve rooms on the executive floors in the hotels that have them.  (We are staying at the Sydney Harbor Marriott which is literally about 2 blocks from the harbor.)  We went down there and had breakfast and lots of coffee before we headed out this morning.

We walked about 45 minutes over to the Sydney Fish Market early this morning.  It’s an interesting place – lots of unusual fish and seafoods.  We couldn’t believe the number of people eating raw oysters, sushi and fried seafood platters at 9:30 am!  Made me glad we had a good breakfast at the hotel – otherwise Mark would have probably tried the most unusual thing he saw and let me tell you there was no shortage of unknowns.

Did I say it is hot here?  I can already tell we didn’t bring enough short sleeve clothes.  (But I am proud of myself.  Everyone that has traveled with me knows that I don’t travel light.  But then again, who has ever had to borrow my lint roller, duct tape, scissors, or something out of my pharmacy?  I actually made it in ONE suitcase and it only weighed 48 pounds.  For me for 2 weeks, that is a record!!!)

We took a ferry to a popular beach area about 30 minutes north of the city.  It was packed.  There wasn’t another square inch to put down a beach towel or body (not that I would have anyway).  Lots of wanna be surfers in the water and lots of sun burnt people on the beach.

We’ve just come back to the hotel and tho it’s not 5 o’clock in Sydney, it is somewhere else and we’re enjoying a nice glass of a Hunter Valley Semillion that we bought earlier today and have had chilling since morning.  It’s nice to know that Mark and I are aging at the same rate.  I was getting pretty tired on the ferry ride back from Manly Beach and thought it was just me.  I sure was glad Mark “suggested” we come back to the room and relax for a little while.  I have no idea how far we walked today, but it was farther than my usual walk from my car to Calvin’s and Paper ‘n Things and back to the car.  (Sure glad I packed tennis shoes.)

We had a little glitch earlier with our card reader and bought a new one, so I’m going to try to attach some pictures with this post.  Pictures just don’t do justice to the scenery.  I feel like I need a wide angle panoramic lens.

I did get a compliment from Katie – she said she didn’t think this was as corny as she originally thought.  She did burst my bubble thought – she said her friends Chris and Crissy that live down here have a blog: chrisandcrissydownunder.com.  Evidently I’m not as creative as I thought!

5 best things today (not necessarily in order of best to worst):

            Weather

            Fish Market

            Ferry Ride

            Wine

Roof top lunch over looking Manly Beach

Love you all and miss everyone.  Ellen – hope the girls are being good for you.

  1. Love hearing about everything yall are doing! I never thought we’d see the day when wine was all the way down on your favorites list at 4 though… XOXOXO

  2. Sounds like great fun…what currency do they use? I couldn’t really tell the price of the shrimp but I’m all for exotic seafood. OK…I have to ask…any good bread? Have fun!
