Stellenbosch, Saturday, August 13th, 2016

It was another dreary day today. We were suppose to have driven to the coast today and gone whale watching, but due to the weather and the guys not feeling well, we changed our plans.
We drove north to the Fairview Wine Estates. They are known for their wines and sheep’s milk cheese. They also have goats they let out into the vineyards so they can honestly call some of their wines “Goats du Roam,” which aggravates the French by playing off the Cotes de Rhone wine. They have goat towers where the goats live, but unfortunately they were down eating today and we didn’t see them on the tower.

We then went to The Spice Route. It is a cluster of about 10-12 Cape Dutch buildings which house a selection of artisans showcasing their produce and products. There was everything from wine, chocolates, charcuterie, glass blowing, coffee roasters, grappa makers, a spice shop and of course an African product gift shop. It was really a neat place, but it was drizzling the entire time we were there so we didn’t do as much exploring as we’d have like to do.

We drove to Franschoek, which is a delightful town near Stellenbosch. It has some beautiful wine estates, a couple that we stopped at, but we didn’t do any tasting. I’m getting Mark and Tom’s crud and wine doesn’t even sound good.

We got back to Stellenbosch and the guys slept for a couple of hours while Carol and I caught up on email and checked on everyone at home. It is so tragic and sad to see the flooding. I just can’t imagine the amount of water in Baton Rouge. Our prayers are with everyone affected.

We’re off to Kruger tomorrow!  The entire trip has been fabulous, but this is what we’ve been waiting for!!!!!!!   We have all agreed that this is a wonderful place and wish everyone could see it.   The scenery is beautiful, the history is so interesting, the people are friendly, the food is delicious and the wines are great. What more could you ask for!
